I just became a mother! (new babies!)

I had 3 baby birds make them selves known last week behind a broken door leaning aginst the side of a building in a thick leaf litter , I dont think the nest was there there was no sign of a nest at all but I have no idea where the babies came from , they were half way featherd out so I know they were at least a week or two old depending on how fast this spieaceis grows , the parents are takeing care of them , the parents are black parekeet sized birds with long narrow yellow beaks and yellow orange feet they have some desings in there feathers but its in a dark brown or soemthing so it dosnt show up well.
I started with 3 babies and after a few days there were only 2 then only 1 then yesterday I went to check on him and he wasnt there but I stood still and listend and I heard him so I walked around trying to find him , the little blighter had managed to cross a pathway and climb up a big tall bush and was sitting near the top and lo and behold there was one of his siblings too.
I wonder what kind of birds they are, there shure loud , im inside my apartment with sunny patch on the tv and I can still hear him every ten minutes or so when he sees mom or dad witht there food comeing back to him.

I apparently am a bird nest magnet. I have the other nest that fell out of the bush.....a bird started a nest in another hanging plant but abandoned it very early on......and I can see some up in the big trees as well.

I have googled and decided that, based on the eggs and what I have seen of the momma bird....this new nest and eggs are from a Tennessee Warbler.

House Finch on the porch, Tennessee Warbler in the garage.

Also, I saw Dad bird feeding the babies in the hanging basket a little while ago. So guess they are still around!

I love this thread, Nella! You have done an awesome job of showing the progression. Very, very cool!

I went to get my oil changed yesterday and when the guy popped the hood he jumped back and said, "You have a nest in here!" I scampered out of the car to check it out. It looked like a mouse nest instead of a bird's nest. The funny part was that there were bits of fluffy dog bed insides all in it. (My dog Lucy cannot leave a dog bed intact. She feels obligated to "kill" it and pull the stuffing out.) Thankfully there were no mice in it!

I've been following this thread also! Is that new nest from a cardinal? I had an egg from a nest fall down and that egg looks like it's from a cardinal. anyway, good luck with your next batch!

thank you so much for all this i am really enjoying this VERY much

Lunachick, I am pretty sure the new nest is from a Tennesssee Warbler. I googled them and the female birds look like the one in the nest and the eggs are identical. Egg-zactly the same! (I couldn't resist).

Glad you guys are enjoying the pictures. I actually caught momma bird back on the nest earlier.....a really bad storm blew through and she tried hanging on as long as possible but finally had to fly off. I did go check the babies now and they are okay. The basket was swinging around.....I thought about taking it down and setting it on the covered porch but last time we had a severe hurricane like storm (last weekend), the baskets on the porch blew away and the ones hanging got smashed but survived.

So that is that! New pics in a day or two. I assume I will get another egg from the Warbler nest tomorrow as well. Whoo!

Sort of sad update today. Went to check on the babies and all was well.

And as I was looking at them, the baby on the upper right jumped out of the nest and over the railing and fluttered down to the planter below. I have searched and searched and searched for it but can't find it. I did catch the dad bird flying out of the planter at one point today, so it may have still gone down to feed him. The other three are moving around the nest now. One ALMOST backed out of the hanging basket today after being fed, as I watched through the window and another was completely on the other side of the basket in the plant. I expect they will be flying away soon. The one that jumped out fluttered down well enough it should not have been injured, so they should be just a couple days from flying, I think. The planter is full of bushes and weeds and stuff and I just can't see well enough into or under them.

Bummer.

The Warbler nest is progressing as expected.

That is that.

OH my goodness that nest is beautiful! Like something out of a fairytale!

When they are almost fully feathered and leave the nest they are fledglings. The parent birds will still feed and protect them.

I felt bad that maybe he flew out because he was trying to get away from me. But when I saw the others almost falling out on their own, I felt a little better. I still have never touched them or the nest, I just move the basket or hold my cameraphone up to get the picture.

There are more than just 2 birds that are protecting them. I see only two (I assume mom and dad) feeding them, but if I go outside there are usually at least 3 or more that are flying around upset. Must be a group effort!
