Last Tuesday a 2 day old chick went missing and I had no idea what happened. Then yesterday I watched a small bird the size of a Blue Jay swoop down and grab a baby chick right next to it's momma! It flew away into the orchard. I went to look for it but it was gone. SO SO SO sad. [IMG]
I am going to have to start locking the babies and mommies in the coup and not let them out in the day. They love walking around in the yard so they will not be happy with the change. [IMG]

Could have been a merlin? We have magpies here that are real nest robbers and will take chicks if they can! [IMG]

Most likely a small hawk, a Sharp- Shinned Hawk is about the same size as a Blue Jay. I think I would keep the others in a covered area where the hawks can't get to them.

Yep, all the babies are in an enclosed area now with their mommies. So sad to watch that. [IMG]

Quote:No, it didn't look like a Merlin. It was small and blue.

Whoa, this story made me raise an eyebrow and gasp! Definitely not something I would think to worry about. At least you discovered what was going on before any more got taken - how horrible!
