This is my first time making a thread I'm not sure if I'm doing this right. So I'm trying to hatch four chicken eggs, two ended up cracking but I don't think the membrane part cracked because it's not oozing. Anyway the setup I have is a lunch box filled with towels, two socks filled with rice that I microwave for 30 seconds every morning and night, the next thing is I have a reptile heating pad on top and it's zipped up (I open it sometimes because I think they need ventilatition but not sure), I also flip the eggs 1-2 times a day. Another problem is that one of the cracked chicken eggs air cells has expanded all the way up the egg but I'm still holding hope for them. Last thing (I think) is that these four eggs are the first ones my chickens have laid, we have a rooster but still not completely sure if the eggs are fertile (though the rooster seems VERY interested) plus it's only been two days so I don't see spider veins or any sign of life, I candel them using my phone light in a dark room and I'm marking where the air cell Is. ( I was told it expanded)

I'm not sure how well this set up will work, however, candling the eggs will show you. You will not see anything until at least five days, though I usually wait at least a week. I'd recommend purchasing a small, inexpensive incubator or using a broody hen instead.

You may want to look into a Janoel12 incubator, it's relatively inexpensive on Amazon. Your set up the heat is too inconsistent. Yes you need ventilation as well as humidity control. 7 days is the first candling when you should see the veining.

As for your cracked eggs, assuming it's a fracture crack & no lost shell, you'll need to seal that crack, the membrane will dry out and IF they hatch will be shrink wrapped. Good luck

Congratulations on your first thread your first brooding experience! I love the “can do” attitude of chicken people. I’m fairly new and have only had hatches from broody hens, but there are lots of very knowledgeable and experienced folks on here that will give you good advice. Best wishes for a successful hatch!

So here are the picture they are candeled because thats the only way you can see the cracks and in the first one you can see the giant air cell (also yes I put scotch tape on it). Another egg cracked without me touching it either also there were two other eggs that I found which are in the lunchbox too (there close enough to the same age but I marked them so I know that there younger.). I am also looking for an incubator and I'm looking at the Janoel12 incubator. (also the top pictures air cell has gotten smaller, and that ones cracked too but I'm not sure if you can see it because the photos a little blurry.)
