I only have 3 male ducks, and I have an egg

it is easy to mistake a muscovy duck. We raised them for many years. Until they are at least a year old, it can be hard to tell what they are. I had a hen that looked like a drake and often was worse than any drake thought of being, but raised the most ducklings every setting. She passed away at the age of 12 and her mate lasted one more year and then passed away on their old nest one night, he was 14 then.

Although there are hens that look like drakes with muscovies the differences are not only in size. Its in head shape, tail shape, body shape, whether they hiss or coo, personality. And of course eggs, lol.

How old are your "boys"? Could we pretty please get a picture of the group and of just the possible offending duck, lol

thats so sweet.. and sad.

I could be wrong.. but.. HE was most definatly a HE last fall and he has the carbuncles of a drake, very heavy down the neck etc and the tuff on the head. Come to think of it though.. this duck isn't as vocal... humm? got pics of your old duck? Im going to try and get some of this duck today,, baring the rain.

Muscovies arent vocal ducks, my drakes only make noise when they get agitated by the other boys or someone passing them. My girls like to coo at everything though, lol

Here are photos of the 3. The one you may think looks most like a hen is MR. Freaky.. trust me.. he is so boy that even my rooster isn't safe. There is nothing girl about him. The one I think is the Blue, however.. I have been wrong before.

Mr Freaky is the one on the far left in this first photo,

the third one I had a hard time getting a face shot. He has the really pretty black carbuncles, however I haven't seen him do much chasing anyone around? so.... who knows.

The only one I have that is vocal is Mr Freaky.. he loves to follow me around and get cereal. I buy him cereal.. yes.. I do.. LOL.. and when I don't give him some he hisses at me. I did have females last year, however a fox took care of that. anyone living near SW Iowa with some females?

It wasn't' a double yoke.. and wasn't that large. It was the shell its self that brought my attention to it. You know how just the shell of a duck egg is well? a duck egg.. All my chickens lay dark brown eggs, this was light, with that smooth waxy finish that only a duck egg can have.

Chickens and ducks don't change sex. A few amphibians and fish can.

Females can mount other females as a show of dominance and sometimes this is mistaken for a sex change. Also, if something goes wrong with the ova it can change the hormones in the duck making it act more boy than girl, but it doesn't mean there was a sex change.

We have had muscoys for a couple years now. I would say that the third one you cant get a good head shot of is a girl. The one with head down first pic, walking away to the right second pic, and in the middle third pic is a girl, looks smaller head and feet wise then the other two. Some of our girls have had just as much carnucling as the males, but the size is usually different. You can see with that one though it has much less of the red areas then the other two seems a bit smaller and its feet look smaller, I would say that is the girl, mystery solved.
