I would think that a bird could develop a hormone imbalance because of a health glitch such as a tumor that would cause it to take on the secondary sexual characteristics and behaviors of the opposite sex, but it wouldn't really change from one gender to the other.
And I was reading about muscovies somewhere (Holderread's Storey Guide?) recently and it mentioned heavily caruncled females sometimes being sterile. So I'm wondering if you don't have a female that looks very much/passes for a male.
