We think she is a cuckoo marans. About 3 weeks and pretty flighty too but will take meal worms out of my hand. When would we be able to figure out gender?

Are the legs pinkish white? If so, then it's a cuckoo marans. I think you should be able to know by six to eight weeks. Though it took me eight weeks because one threw me off

S/he has a black wash on the legs and they do look more pinkish whitish. I've read what pattern to look for but I'm so new to this that the barring looks the same to me.

You usually won't notice barring until they feather out better. Cuckoos are mostly black peppered with white spots. Barred rocks and Dominiques will have crooked, but thicker barring. The boys will be almost gray with thick barring, sometimes almost very straight bars. If yours (or any cuckoos you get in the future) have yellow legs, then it might be a barred rock or dominique. The black wash is common in both the yellow and pinkish/white. It's just a chick thing, I believe
