If you were going to get a rooster, what breed would you get?

I may have a chick that's a rooster but if he turns out to be a hen, I'm going to want to get one. But I only want one rooster and I don't want something that is mean or aggressive. Is that something that is breed dependent, or are all breeds potentially aggressive?

Post a picture and tell us about your favorite Roo!

All are potentially aggressive but it is definitely breed dependent.
I've had about 40 breeds but only kept about 10 breeds of roosters. My favorite by far for flock protection, aloofness/non-aggressiveness to humans and flavor of meat are my Black Penedesencas.
I've had perhaps 50 adult roosters of this breed and only one showed any aggression. He was delicious.

It is often the individual bird as well. I'm sure others will rave about breeds they've owned but that's my 2 cents worth.

What breed is the chicken you have? for now i only have Silkie roosters, i do have a standard sized rooster but he's a baby (Bielefelder) although is touted as a gentile breed. The silkies are fairly good, they definitely can be cocky lol but being banties easily hand-able. I find their pretty guard y too, i have some in with hens and a trio that free range the farm with no hen.

depending what breed you want to come out with. if you're into dual purpose you can get new hampshire, plymouth white rocks. what breed is the chick you're growing right now?

Well I have a mixed flock of all hens that I didn't plan well. I started out with Easter Eggers for egg color. None of them have fulfilled the fantasy I have of a chicken loving me and wanting to sit and my lap and follow me around and tell me her hopes and dreams.

They do lay beautiful eggs though. They're all 18 months old. I've lost a few to predators and still have 7 of those. They're in a nice new coop now that I think/hope is predator proof.

My feed store had some Cuckoo Marans and I bought 3 of those. One of those seems to love me but she's not sure she wants to commit at this young age. I also bought 2 of those dyed white chicks because I felt sorry for them and my kids were begging me. I'm not sure what they are.

I've ordered a Silver Laced Wyandotte, a Plymouth, a Buff Orpington and a Blue Orpington. They'll be here end of June.

I have to admit that I am shallow and want to surround myself with the beautiful people of chickendom so I want a rooster that is just drop dead gorgeous. At the same time, I don't want a bully.

Omg why? Where does this happen? Poor lil things. How long do they stay that color? Don't the chems hurt them?

The color only lasts as long as the baby fuzz - as they grow their actual feathers over the first few weeks the fuzz is shed and replaced. The process, products used and level of harm depend and vary from one "producer" to the next.
