I'll join Mahonri and MFB, share my daughters school award

As I think I posted a while back, my daughter won a state-wide
writing contest for fifth and sixth graders. So much money for her
school, so much for her room.

Quite an honor.

Tonight, at the school board meeting, she and several other students
were given their awards. Not just from her school, but the other schools
in the district. Students from kindergarden to the senior year. Important
enough that the local newspaper was covering it.

A gathering of some of the top students in the county. One young lady was
awarded a $167,000.00 scholarship. What an honor!

Many of these students and their parents, we know from other activitys.

As my daughter walked across the stage toward her principal, her teacher,
to receive her official paper, read to her by the school board president I was
once again awed by the amazing people who are in my daughters life today.

What role models!

On the way to the meeting we stopped by the fire department, where she is
treated as family. Parade and bean dinner this weekend, she rides the truck.

At the meeting, I once again thought of her teachers. Every one she's ever had.
My wife and I know them all by name, and they us. If I could hand pick her teachers
I couldn't pick a better, more dedicated bunch.

As proud of I am of my daughter, this post isn't really about her, or the award. But
about the awesome role models in her life. All her A's...wouldn't be there without
those teachers behind her. These role models are teaching her things that aren't in
the books, as they lead by example in giving back to the community.

To learn to actually be a valuable part of the community...that's worth it all.

So to all the teachers out there who have educated, and guided, our children throughout
this year...tonight, my hat is off to you.

A quick piece to share with the MFB, and his son Jon.

The lead story in todays Columbus Dispatch (Ohio) was about
a man with autism. I just skimmed it, we were in a hurry. But the
man had worked himself up to a lead position in the Ohio State University
Hospital.

Share that with your son, that there is no dream out of reach.

I'll second the kudos to the teachers, and add one to all the volunteers who are involved in schools, sports, churches and communities. I see the same people over and over again, and know every community is the same. I know someone who was on the board at my son's preschool, elementary school and now middle school. I expect to see her in two years when my kid gets to high school.

So kudos to the teachers, coaches, scout leaders, band boosters, Sunday school teachers, PTA moms, WatchDoGS, and involved parents.

My DD is graduating on the 3rd. Here's the list of awards.

Red cord-giving blood twice as a Senior
Gold cord-top 25% 3.5 GPA or better
National Honors Society-they get a special collar to wear with their cap and gowns
Outstanding Band Member-this only goes to one student
State Solo trumpet
State Ensemble
She's the only senior who played with the college trumpet choir all year-not an award but an accomplishment that helped her earn a small scholarship.

She has done a fantastic job. But boy oh boy she is now 18 and in love. Shoot me now.

I know how proud you must be of your girl.

Encourage her to keep entering these contests. My daughter entered a writing contest through the AVID program (I don't know if all states have this) when she was in 8th grade. The judges were local business owners. My daughter was selected as the first place winner and received a 4 year, full ride scholarship to the university of her choice.
