I'm just about ready cull my first one

    I've never known a chicken and ate it. But this rooster is ready, and he's just a nightmare for the hens.
    I'm getting up my guts and nerve. I've watched about 20 videos now. I've done rabbits, failed at a squirrel, done a few ducks, this can't be all that hard, except he's a gorgous rooster.
    But I think I'd like him better as a beer can chicken.

    I wonder if those cloth rubber coated palm gloves would help with the plucking?

    It's too bad it can't be done looney tunes style

    Welp, It's a done deal. I was in the right space for it this morning, and whacko now looks like a grocery store chicken.
    It wasn't all that difficult really.

    I only had two problems.
    Piercing of the neck and bleeding out was easy. I modified an old highway cone for that.

    I don't think I scalded him long enough. I went like two minutes, with an extra, but they didn't seem to come off as easy as in some of the videos,

    I got him opened up ok, and the guts mostly removed, but the whole anus area didn't seem as smooth as it should have gone, until I found the right place to cut.

    I'll give him a day or so to chill in the fridge until I forget where he came from. Then I'll give him a salt brine for a day, then his little butt is going on top of a beer can on the smoker the next day.

    I actually expected you to be a pro at this. I found I needed to dunk the bird more then once. I dunk and pull feathers until they got tricky and then dunked again.
    I had the benefit of being shown how to gut a bird and still found that difficult at first, it took me forever too. I had to learn to be less gentle.
    Beer can chicken sounds delicious!

    It took way longer than it should have, but I was really trying to be careful not to blow up any organs or anything. I'm sure I too will be a little less cautious next time, and will get faster as time goes on.
    Of course I'll have to buy me a run of meat birds or something, But I can't imagine what to do with 15 or 20 birds all ready at the same time. I just don't have the freezer space, nor that many neighbors or even friends for that matter.
    I kinda doubt I could prep them and take them to the homeless shelter, Although I would be happy to do such.

    I am there with you. I discussed the freezer space problem with another member and they said get dual purpose chickens, process what you have room for and keep what you do not until you do have room for them.

    I just started last year, I did a run of just 4 Cornish x. They are yummy, but I did not care for the breed. I think dual purpose birds make better sense for me anyway

    That's not a bad idea. I wonder if they make tires like that?
