Living in the mountains of North Carolina in a small town. My husband and I are retired. I saw the baby chicks in the hardware store early March.. I came home and read everything on the computer I could find about raising chicks, building pen and house. I also brought home Backyard Poultry magazine. Next week brought home 4 baby chicks: 2 Golden Comets and 2 Silverlaced Wyandottes.
Everything went fine as I was raising them in the house. Building the pen wasn't as easy as I expected. We had to hire help. Now after 2 predators and losing 2 of my chickens I am determined not to lose anymore. The pen is safer.
I'm rasing these girls in the pen and yard.
I need experienced information that I will get from all your wisdom. Looking forward to learning more.

    Out to pasture
[IMG] please check out the predators forum. Do you know what type of animal did this? Many times neighbor dogs running loose are the major cause. What ever did this will be back because it was successful.

Veterinarians don't think much of chickens, do they? Avian vets are not much better, are they? I had an egg bound hen (her first egg).
If you know the trouble I went through? If you want to know and have some advice, let me know. I needed a vet in the Asheville, NC area.

We purchased a save-a-heat trap SP We caught 2 groundhogs?! The first chicken looked as if she was attacked by a racoon. The second my husband saw and descriebed it much the same injury as I saw in the first. Do groundhogs harm chickens?
