    July 22, 2013 I bought 4 chicks.

Thought they were all hens, but turns out there were 3 hens & 1 roo. :) surprise!
Kept them in the house in a tote til they were ready to be put out side in their run/coop.
When it's warm enough they run loose, & put them selves up at dusk, then I shut their lil coop door & the big run door.
When it's too cold for them to be out & about they have the run & coop space. (not much space, but when it's 5° it seems they enjoy being in there instead of out in elements) I don't blame them. :)

    out in run :)

They have done great! No heat lamp or lights needed.

Their run is wrapped in 2 layers of plastic. Lots of straw in the run, & cedar chips in the coop & nesting boxes.

They started laying right when we had the worst part of our winter. ha!

My cat & them get along great! see --

We had 1 hen go missing a few weeks ago. We walked the whole property, can't find her, or even a single feather.
That was heart breaking, the not knowing.
That being said, I'd like to turn a part of our barn into a coop. & soon get 7 or so chicks (hopefully all hens).
Raise them in the house then when they are ready introduce them to the others. :D

    Love this sight!
Thank you all for sharing & letting me share, it's very informational! :)

Welcome to BYC. I thought cedar chips were toxic to chickens but may be wrong. Nice flock
