I put 6 fertile eggs under my broody hen about 2 weeks ago. Since then, 3 of the eggs (when candled) have shown that "bacteria ring," so I got rid of them. The other 3 eggs don't show anything when candled at all. They're completely dark -- no ring, no veins, no spots. Any clue what this might mean? Should I keep them going for the next week, or order some more and try again? Thanks.
If light will not show through the egg it means you likely have a chick growing in there. If you can shine a light through the egg it is infertile. The way you describe, it I would say you have chicks developing.
The way you describe, it I would say you have chicks developing. I was told you start seeing veins by this time. Is this incorrect? Or does it take longer to see the veins?
If you have dark eggs or a low powered candler, all you will see in a 14 day old egg is dark. Might not have the resolution to see veins. However, if you but a monster light behind them, you should see some. Else, just let them go for another week and see what you get. If they were clears, they will look like raw eggs when candled with your light. With a really good light, white eggs, and if you know what you are looking for, you can see veins on the end of day 2, start of day 3. Practically though, day 6+ will give you good veins.
