For whatever it's worth, of my first three chicks that I ever had (cream legbar pullets), two died and only Paula survived. I was using a heat lamp and struggling to keep the temperature low enough. I'm almost certain that I basically cooked the poor little things. I will never use a heat lamp again - use a Mama heating pad now. I was convinced that I was cursed until I put it together (of course, I was pretty inexperienced).

I know it must be frustrating for us to keep coming up with different things/ideas, but just trying to help. :hugs

it's fine that's how we learn. The thermometer hanging by if says 90°. I can't really raise it, but I could shift to the 100w white bulb. I just figured in 5' square pen they had plenty of room to move where they were comfortable. That picture was taken when I went up to check and turned on the light most of them were asleep till I rattled the cage to see if heads came up.

@Sally Sunshine update. Feeling much better. Only my belly button is still a little sore. Pops surprised me with 24 of his eggs that he wants me to hatch so The spouse and I fixed ugly and joined the Easter Hal. They will be more greenies. And that's that!

I've never used a heat lamp, and never intend to. I did do a lot of research early on about how to use them and what to look for when regulating heat. If chicks stay on the perimeter, it's too hot. If they huddle in the middle and chirp loudly, it's too cold.

I bought a Sweeter Heater, and will probably get a few more before it's all said and done. I built a heat pad cave for when chicks get a little older, but wouldn't trust the heat regulation for newborns. All of my day-old chicks immediately ran under the SH, and if you didn't see them moving you'd swear they were dead. They were extremely quiet...
