anyone tried this? tell me what you found, or shoot me down

prowling through secondhand store today, I found a upside down range hood

and got to thinking -- it has a fan, it has provision for light bulbs, it's made to withstand considerable heat

what about rigging it up with thermostat, light bulbs, build a styrofoam enclosure on top, reflective insulation below it

diffuser of some sort where the warm air would vent upwards -- maybe put filled water bottles where the heat blows on them

just one of those light-bulb ideas, what do you think?

Sounds good but I am not mechanically inclined. You would have all the parts like you said....fan and light. Wouldnt hurt to try

I would not mess with it, too heavy, too bulky, you really have 2 sockets and a fan in a tank like fixture.

What I would do is salvage those sockets and the fan and transfer it to another box.

Just my take on it. If you insist you can probably make a bator from a kitchen range too. Probably would be easier since you got enclosed box, and see through door already.

I'd probably do better with a dead microwave -- LOL -- I do have one of those out behind the garage (and no, I'm not taking the back off it nor messing with capacitor !!! )

only thing is, though, while it is large for a microwave, it's considerably smaller than the styrofoam "bait box" I had originally planned to use, following MissPrissy's design -- if I'm going to the trouble and time to hatch, might as well hatch a BUNCH, knowing that some may not make it

I might try it anyway --- I have the room (5 x 5 shower not currently being used, upstairs --- or most anywhere in the daylight basement which stays a steady 55* with no drafts)

I'll check to see how much they wanted for that hood --- probably easier, possibly cheaper, than finding a power supply for a fan out of an old computer ... so far all the power cords I have found have too low an output to run that computer fan
