Incubator Questionor

I have a home build incubator and my hatch rate has been very low. Its not the fertility or the eggs thats an issue, its the incubator. Today I bought a used Little Giant Forced Air Incubator and I have read the instructions and I am wondering if its really as easy as the directions make it sound. Is there any tips or tricks that I should know about when using one of these? I have a thermometer and a hydrometer calibrated and ready to go. I am picking up some eggs from a friend tomorrow and just want to make sure that everything is in order. I am setting it up shortly.

Any helpful suggestions?

Keep another wafer thermostat on hand, they seem to not hold a good temperature after a short while.
