Hi Everyone:

I have been a lurker for a long time. So many posts have helped me in the past, so thank you for sharing! However, I have a sick chicken that the vet can't even diagnose.

Four month old Lavender Orpington. She has hard cysts, which I am assuming is pus that have formed in the corners of both eyes. They are about the size of a pea. She has not other symptoms except for the eyes.

Took her to a vet that supposedly was a avian specialist and he said he couldn't tell for sure what it was, but wanted $250 to sedate and open the pockets. He said that I could try to do it myself too.

So, any advice????? I just wish I knew what it was. We don't see any worms in the eye, but could the worms be in this cyst that has formed in the corner of the eye???

The pockets are enlarging daily even though I have her on Duramycn 10 and started colloidal silver drops yesterday.

Help. Thanks.

Where do you live? Eye worms could certainly be a possibility, especially if you live in the Southern United States (they are more common there). I'm not sure on the treatment for eye worms, though.

Hello. Do a Google image search for "mycoplasma conjunctivitis" and see if any of the pictures look like what you're seeing. It's probably the #1 cause of conjunctivitis in poultry.

If it is mycoplasma, Duramycin can work but there are many reasons why it wouldn't. Denagard is the drug of choice for Mycoplasma gallisepticum.

Here is a pic of one of her eyes. I don't think that it is the disease you are talking about. There is no crusting and no signs of anything else wrong with her. It is not a lower sinus cavity that is effected, but the corner of her eye. The vet said it was the third eyelid. It is hard to the touch and has gotten a little bigger today. She is separated from the flock but it having a hard time seeing.

I am in California. I don't have access to any VetRx or liquid Ivomec if it is eyeworm. Any other ideas to treat if it is eyeworm? I have Ivermectin horse paste wormer on hand.

Anybody else have any suggestions as to the disease?
Thanks!

If she had eyeworms, your hen would be scratching her eye...alot. You could also see them. Since there are no other symptoms, could it be possible that she was pecked hard by other chickens? Although it would be odd to get pecked in the same location in each eye.

Maybe, not a good maybe, the first link. However, there are no other signs of a respiratory type disease and no other birds in my flock are ill.

Ok, I am asking for any additional help on addressing this disease. I will outline the complete picture again.

5 Month Old Pullet. Starting getting growths in the corners of her eyes three weeks ago. Separated her from the flock two weeks ago, but in cage as you can see in pic, with the rest of my flock. I know most of you would have gotten her out of there, but I figured she had already contaminated the flock and they are encouraging her to eat and drink.

The eye swelling is the ONLY condition she has. No breathing issue, no nasal discharge, no smelly discharge. Still eating and drinking normally although she has trouble seeing them.

This is what I have tried. Duramycn10 initially with Colloidal Silver drops in the eyes for 7 days, no improvement, but not getting worse. Wormed with Ivomec in case it was eye worm. Tried NFZ in the eyes for 4 days, with no improvement, so discontinued. Ordered Denagard online, and have been giving for three days. No improvement so far.

I know that some of you will say, try Tylan 50. I may still, but I have spent over $100 for meds so far and I REALLY would like to know what this is.

Any suggestions and help appreciated. Also, no other chickens in my flock have been affected.
