I think taking him to the vet is the best course of action that does look bad. Vets have alot more resources to work on this and oral antibiotics also. Please let us know how he is doing. Poor thing that does look painful.I saw it bleeding the other day. That's the only time I've seen anything come out. I never noticed the nail before. We have turtles in our lake and that me be the reason for that. I may just take him in to a vet I know that treats birds. I don't know if he would let me do all that you were saying that needs to be done. I feel so sorry for him.
