I just found one of my hens is bleeding on the base of her comb. I cleaned it with peroxide mixed with water and want to use polysporin but she is still bleeding.

My question is:
Can I use styptic powder to stop the bleeding? Or should I just use polysporin?

She is eating but I am worried. I dont know what happened. There is nothing to injure herself on in the run and no evidence of predator break in.
Thank you in advance.

Do you have pictures? Can you see if the comb is ripped ot torn from the base? Most comb injuries will, stop bleeding eventually, but you can indeed use styptic powder, blood stop powder, flour or corn starch. Peroxide should be avoided, since it can injure tissue. Polysporin or plain Neosporin are fine to use once bleeding has stopped.

Really? Oh dear.
I read someone elses post that watered down peroxide was good. Thank you so much, i will not use that again. I will try styptic powder first and then polysporin when the bleeding has stopped.
It doesnt look torn off, but I will try and get a picture. Thank you so much for replying so fast!🙏🏻

Here is Ginger and her bloody head. Not pretty but not as bad as I first thought. It is worse on the left side. She looks so sad. You can see it in her eyes.

I just wanted to say thank you so much for telling me about corn starch. It worked faster than the styptic powder to stop the bleeding and this morning, after a night in the dog, ahem, chicken crate, Ginger looks so much better.
I put her in the crate, and the crate in the coop. Her ever present partner in crime, Duchess, it seems, roosted all night on top of Ginger’s crate lol! Duchess and Ginger totally have each others back and have been together well over a year ( yet I wouldn’t be surprised if Duchess turns out to be the pecker!) and always stay with each other.
Having said all of that, thank you again for the tip about corn starch!😊🙏
