My 24 yr old mare came down lame on 4th of July. I figured she got spooked over the fireworks in the area and pulled something. We've been soaking her leg in ice water and putting linamint on it. Hasn't helped. In fact, it has gotten worse. She is in tremendous pain and can't walk on it. Last night I noticed a large bulge behind her cannon bone. Lots of heat there too... So now I'm thinking either a bowed tendon or maybe even broken? 🙁

Here's a video of me trying to get her to walk -

I've wrapped her legs and given her some Bute. This was her response.... Poor girl. 😭

I'm sorry I know nothing about stuff like this in horses to my unexperienced eye it looks like it might be broken I'm trying to think of someone that could help @casportpony maybe!? I would get a vet out there right now it keeps getting worse that would probably be your best option imo

I would get a vet out as soon as possible. Leg injuries are extremely serious with horses. I've successfully treated stress injuries, and swelling caused by bumps and bruises on legs, but anything that involves continuous lameness is extremely serious. I really hope your able to get some help for your girl, and she recovers. Big hugs.

If it were me, I would start giving Turmeric for immediate help with swelling. It worked really great for my mare after a minor surgery. I would also restrict her mobility until a vet can see her she she doesn't make it worse. A stall would be good, but we used coral panels for my mare to section off a stall sized space under their pasture shelter after her surgery.

Thanks for taking a peek. I've been in contact with the vet via text message. She thinks it's a classic bowed tendon. This poor girl did have a suspensory injury about a year and a half ago so it's definitely possible. Poor thing is in some serious pain though....

Just wanted to add that I've never dealt with a bowed tendon injury before... I know they are very serious. This girl was a hunter jumper for many years until the injury put her into retirement. Naturally I'm worried about arthritis in the leg too...
