Would staining or painting the inside surface of a homemade wooden bator help anything?

All the ones I've seen made are painted. My factory GQFs are painted also.I'm sure it helps elongate the life of the wood as well as control moisture/humidity...

I'd use exterior for the durability and water resistance. You could go with either a water or oil based paint, that all depends upon how much time and money you want to spend on painting.
