I recently got a silkie rooster to breed with my 2 frizzle bantams. He has fathered 2 chicks already from the previous owner and is not yet 12 months old. My girls are 3 years old and I introduced him to their Avery yesterday. I have seen one of my girls picking on him a bit but otherwise they ignore him. Are my girls too old to have chicks as they are 3 years old already and when will he show signs of mating?

  2. Hens can have chicks as long as they lay eggs, My rooster started mating about the time he was crowing, and I’m sure He will most likely be at the top of the pecking order before he reaches 1 year.

Maybe your hens would prefer a Frizzle rooster.

maybe but that wouldn't be good genetically as frizzle x frizzle breedings create frazzled chicks which are genetically weaker and have brittle feathers and i don't want to risk that so ill have to breed them to a smooth feathered roo

I have no idea if this is true.
How do we still have Frizzles then?

frizzle is a gene that is entirely physical, so if you have a frizzle bird and you breed it to a smooth feathered bird about 50% of the chicks will be frizzled. you cannot breed frizzle out nor can you create it, you have to breed a frizzled bird to a smooth feathered bird. you can also breed a frizzled bird to a frizzle bird but you risk creating a frazzle which is genetically not good as they are weaker and have brittle feathers therefore are not good for breeding and may also be sterile.

You learned something today. What the OP posts is fact. Rooster will begin breeding hens when he feels more at home. Egg quality deteriorates as hens age, but your hens should still be fertile.

Does this apply to any other breeds?
I know virtually nothing about breeding chickens for specific qualities.
