Hi there,
We are avid followers of backyard chickens. We love the information!! Thank you all; we were curious if the iPhone 11 (or any other iPhone/Android for that matter) affects the chicken eye/ specifically the right nearsighted eye. 2 of our friendliest chickens, their right eye is swollen, and they peck at my iPhone 11 camera as if it were emitting red light, which we find interesting. Can’t seem to find any info on the internet except that iPhone 11 is exceptionally radioactive and with IR light.
All the best,
Victoria + Lukas

Hi thank you immensely.
Today 3 more chickens have the same poofy eye thing and we don’t want to use antibiotics what do we do
I’ll send pics soon
I am not sure as I have only had experience with eye injuries, not other eye issues. Since it sounds like the problem is spreading, it could be more than just an injury.
Here is a good link to check symptoms http://www.poultrydvm.com/views/symptoms.php
I would also search the forums for eye-related issues.

Welcome to BYC!
I am not sure what an iphone may emit, but whatever it is would probably not cause swelling. 🤔 I imagine they peck it because it looks different from the rest of the phone.
Could you post some pictures of the swollen eyes? Are there any other symptoms?

Hi!

Thanks for the reply, and I agree!

I uploaded a short video of her eyes today on YouTube—
. It's been nearly 1 week.

- It's her right eye, no pus or bubbles; no smell
- She's eating and drinking normal (may even be the leader of her flock)
- Very active and running all over
- We isolated her for 1 night before putting her back with the flock because we free-range and we thought it was better then her being cooped up
- Before releasing her, we treated the eye for 1-2 days with some Vetrx.. spray
- Overall the eye did not worsen and it seemed to improve, but not sure

However,

- We mowed the lawn right next to their coop the day before her eye became swollen
- We also peed around the coop to prevent the raccoons from visiting our hens at night (which started happening).
- We heard that urine turns into ammonia after 24-hours and raccoons hate ammonia
- Some internet research led us to believe that maybe the ammonia from our urine burned her eye as she foraged near the coop, ugh
- We also accidentally fed our pullets 1 bag of layer feed when they were 12 weeks old, we understand how terrible of a mistake we made, but we remedied it immediately and all seem to be doing fine

Thanks for the help with one of our most social hens! Maybe she was pecked at and we just didn't see it...

It could be some type of minor injury, but it can be hard to tell. Continue to watch for other symptoms, but I'm glad to hear it's not getting worse.
I'm not sure about vetrx on eyes, but I have used this and would recommend: https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/vetericyn-ophthalmic-gel?cm_vc=-10005
