I had some chicks hatch the last couple of days, Iris successfully hatched 9 the 2 days prior, yesterday I took 5 of my chicks from the house and gave to Iris, she was not yet on the nest for the night, as soon as she saw me with the chicks she started clucking softly , she stared right at me when I set them one at a time down in front of her, I gently pushed them under her and she did great, that brought her to 14.
This morning I decided to see if she would take 4 more, I have some smaller chicks in the brooder and figured they would do better without the larger ones in there.
She did. mid morning I took 4 more out, stuck them under her, she squatted for a bit then went back to scratching with her 18 babies!

Here are some pics from today:

How can one hen possibly breast feed all those chicks? That's crazy.

Iris is a peach! Oh, Karen, is the door to the tractor ajar? Seems like a chick could get out with no problem through the opening. Or is it just the picture?

Quote:It was just cause I was in there taking pics, they can't get out. Honestly if she a little larger I would stick the other 8 under her and let her raise them all. I don't think she can fluff herself large enough for 26 though [IMG]
