Waiting on my pullet to lay there first eggs. Yesterday one of them spent a lot of time in the nest box. I just knew they were going to lay today. However it's already 3 p.m. I know they don't like to lay in the afternoon. Can I stop watching the camera now or is there still hope for tonight?

They can actually lay anytime of day...I've had them in the nest first thing in the morning right on up to almost roost time. My entire flock would slowly get later through the week and then start all over again first thing in the morning the next week or so.

Well, @eggspecto_patronum did she do it?

New layers can be quite goofy acting, they don't know what they are doing at first and can be confused and anxious, it can take up to a month or so before they get it all figured out. Putting some fake eggs or golf balls in the nest might help show them where to lay. They may scratch around in the nests for weeks before laying, spreading the bedding everywhere. They will scratch around a bit less in nest as they get used to the routine. Meanwhile, eggs everywhere, some of them can be rather funky looking, soft or thin shelled, huge double yolked eggs.

My first timer layed an egg after 9pm when they went in for the night! She didn't lay it in the nesting box though, it was laying on the coop floor under the roosting bar lol. We were waiting all day for her to lay and she didn't, next day I went to let them out in the morning it was there!!!

I have an aussie that never lays until after 6 except in the winter when she lays just before dark. This girl is about 2 years old so it's not a new layer thing. Chickens have a habit of following their own schedule not ours.
