My chicken got mauled by a dog a week ago. She has an injured (I think maybe dislocated) leg, and some puncture wounds, as well as some scraped off skin from getting a clump of feathers pulled out. All her skin wounds are healing pretty nicely, but she has developed a hot, swollen mass under her injured leg which is green. It spans almost the entire left side of her belly. She also had some gritty green stuff in her poo (this may be inconsequential, I don't know). Is it gangrene? I'm not able to post a pic. It may be bruising, but I would have thought this would have developed in a day or two. This didn't show up until day 5 or 6. I'm scared for her.

Also, she smelled strongly of urine rather than the normal chicken poo smell. Again, I don't know if this has anything to do with anything, but hey, the more info the better I suppose...

Sorry I don't know the answer. Googling Chickens with gangrene doesn't help much either. If it hot and swollen sounds like an infection of some sort. Maybe not gangrene. Either way I think antibiotics are called for soon. And a trip to the vet if that's a possibility.

    Good luck

Ya know, I read a thread of threehorses' about bruising being black sometimes. Maybe you could find that thread, and it may be of interest for you. I am at work and don't have time to look for it.
    Good luck. [IMG]

It's definitely dry gangrene. It looks like something in the underside of her body was broken or a tendon torn, and blood flow must have been cut off there, because the bruising/green color went away, and there is a large area that is silvery, dry, and sunken in, surrounded by dry, hard, black flesh. It looks just like gangrene cases I saw on google images. I think we'll just have to put her down. I love her so much, but I have to be real about it and stop the suffering before it gets worse. Sometimes pets are heartbreaking...
