Is it ok to put sand in the run? When I first put it in they began to eat it.nothing happened so they are ok.

Sand is good. They will eat some for grit, dust bathe in it, and have a grand old time!

Yep. Sand is helpful for them to dust bathe in. Also, they will eat it along with small rocks for extra minerals. It actually helps in their digestion. When it comes to natural things, chickens (usually) know what to eat.
