Is it okay to use hardware cloth for the floor of the brooder?

I'm building a nice big new brooder and would like to use hardware cloth on the floor so that I can install dropping pans underneath that just slide out to be emptied into compost

That`s a swell idea, providing you can control the temp.

Yes you can, get the kind with the smallest squares, since the chicks are small they will walk better.

I think thats a good idea. It also cuts down the chance of chicks getting cocci as the poop drops through. I know someone who has that setup and he said they do waste a bit more feed......but I am thinking of trying that too, just for the cleaning and (I think) less chance of cocci

I have the .5 squares and as long as your brooder isn't overcrowded it should be fine. I would add a little board or something to let them take a break everynow and then.
