Today one of our Rhode Island Reds (almost 19 weeks old) started to check out the nesting boxes. She did this multiple times today. She normally is pretty quiet but today she was so talkative and loud. Her comb and waddles are bright red. I noticed that she has done a partial squat a couple of times when we go by her but she stopped doing that. Does this mean we have an egg in our future and if so how long before we can expect it? I'm so excited I can hardly wait! :wee

It does sound like she's getting ready. Getting a first egg from a hen is very exciting! She will most likely lay "fart eggs" for the first one or two eggs which are eggs that a quite smaller than your regular egg size. Some hens go straight to laying though like a few of mine have.
