Penny has been a sick hen for a couple weeks. I had a hen with avian pox (who is over it now) and I think Penny caught it. She developed a honking cough and a lesion on the side of her beak. I saw her eating as normal for a week but then picked her up and she’s lost a lot of weight. I realised she was pecking but not getting the food down. I started her on crumble mash and she’s been eating that fine. The lesion is also much less so I had hope she was getting better.

    Then this poop this afternoon.

Sorry. I thought I’d posted last night but it didn’t go thru. I guess the pic got lost too. It been a very full day!

Penny didn’t eat with the rest this morning. I saw her at the water though.

Not at all normal. How old is this hen? Can you post pictures of her?

I do t know her exact age as I got her ‘used’. I think she’s around 14 months. She’s laid eggs regularly every other day since I’ve had her for several months. I’ll go take a pic of her shortly.

I worry that Penny might have a form of Mareks disease, ocular Mareks, just from her grey eye with the pupil that is not sharply round. She also could have other symptoms related to Mareks, such as wasting away, cancer in organs. But she probably cannot see out of her left eye. I would get a fecal test on her droppings by a local vet to look for parasites and coccidiosis. There can be other causes for bleeding, such as cancer and certain worms. Try feeding her some wet chicken feed, and offer a little cooked egg. How does the right eye look? Here is some reading about Mareks:

I’m reading the article. It says not to panic but I’m feeling a bit of panic . I’ll go take a pic of her other eye. I offered her wet mash this morning and she wasn’t interested but I’ll certainly try again as well as a little cooked egg. It goes easier when I have help but I won’t get that for a few more hours. I’m going to keep her in the dog crate - she was in there voluntarily when I took the pics.
