Pictures of Leg Joint:
Video of her trying to walk yesterday:
6 nights ago the Mr came inside saying he’d found 3 of the 4 girls on the roost eating an egg that someone had just laid & “Floppy” (top of pecking order) sleeping on the bar below.
I found her sleeping w/ head n wing drooped below the bar & the other girls above eating the broken egg...cleaned up the egg (confused how someone laid at night) & put her back up but she flapped her wings & fell over.
I put her in the old brooder box below & found her alert but still inside the next morning. 10 min later I heard screaming & found her in the corner being attacked by the others after she’d made her way out for food/water. Being the top of the pecking order n unable to walk I guess the saw their chance to dominate....
I let the other girls out to range & although she’s always been very feisty n doesn’t allow us to catch or hold her she gladly let me hold her up for water. She drank heavily and ate the scrambled eggs n raw garlic I brought out.
For some reason shes not able to stand up because her right toes stayed curled up & she can’t put any weight on it or straighten them.
She HATES being turned over on my lap but when I do she’s able to fully move her legs and toes around but doesn’t seem to want to extend the right leg unless necessary although she doesn’t fight me or squawk if I manually stretch it out.
She’s been in the garage for 5 days w/ no other signs of illness or injury, is fully alert & clear eyed. No sign of decline or any other issues (not laying though)...
-Eating like normal but have to use syringe for water intake.
-Poo is normal although not often due to small diet & water
-No signs of bumble foot, cuts, or toe nail issues
-She chirps & acts completely normal, especially when the other girls are out and around her.
**She HAS been trying to stand a lot more the past 24 hours although its still pretty much impossible, at first she wasn't really trying at all. Is that improvement?
-Gave her vitamin B complex shots for 2 days & electrolytes/vitamin mix water incase its a vitamin deficiency but they don’t like the taste of the drenched water so I have to manually feed her droppers throughout the day.
-Mixed crushed oyster shells (& gritt) into her eggs in case the egg that was laid was due to egg binding or PYE (I can’t remember if thats the right term) but I don’t feel any egg stuck in her vent or abdomen.
-Gave her 1 epson salt bath on Day #3 but that was more to remove the pasty butt on. I covered her legs in Vaseline afterwards just in case it has anything to do with mites although I couldn't see any issues with the scales but not really sure so I figure better safe than sorry.
...I thought it might be Mareks at first but shes got no other signs: no tremors, eye discoloration or pupil disorder, neck and other muscles are still perfectly fine after 6 days, and she went from perfectly normal to this in a second.
Yesterday I put her out with the girls & sat close by to prevent them from picking on her. she was VERY happy & they spent the time purring to each other. She was preening herself n trying to dirt bathe though not really possible with leg issue.
Last night when I flipped her over I found the elbow joint on the curled foot looking like this (see picture). Does that indicate she may have fallen off the roost and injured it? If so what can I do to help?
I leave town for a week tomorrow & the Mr. isn’t going to be as diligent in manually feeding her water, stretching her legs, cleaning her pasty butt/bedding, or letting her out throughout the day so I’d like to splint or assist today if at all possible.
Could it be botulism? Their drinking water container did have mold in it when I went to clean it last week so I used oxine to do a heavy cleaning of the entire thing but I'm not sure if it was there for a few days and they had been drinking it
@rebrascora do you have any thoughts?
