I named this 4 week old Speckled Sussex chick Matilda but I noticed that her/his face looks different than the others. This just happened today. I ordered six hens and a roo. Any way to tell if Matilda needs to be renamed?[IMG]

Too young to be sure. Pullets can 'blush' in the comb and wattles when they are excited or stressed. Post again in few more weeks.

Sorry, but Matilda is looking sorta roo-ish to me. Hope someone else with more experience chimes in. From my experence anytime that I've had a chick that has a larger redish, pinkish comb so early & wattles started before others of the same breed, they have been roo's.

too early to be positive, but I think you have a good chance of a cockerel. I'm not as sure on the speckled Sussex, though. This bird looks very tan colored, SS are mahogany colored.

We decided to keep the name Matilda, but he's definitely a roo. He's by far the easiest of our chickens to handle. [IMG]
