Hello all,
My little buddy here is about 4 months old now and is a little tricky for me to sex, though at this point I'm seeing quite a lot that makes me think he's a rooster. Sadly, that'd make 5 out of 6 chicks I raised turn out to be roosters... ugh! They've all been super friendly and sociable, but I'm not allowed to have roosters. Thinking this one's a roo too, but I'm holding out hope that somebody can prove me wrong so I don't lose another bird!.
The crest and waddle are pink at best in person, not red (this is an Orpington mix). The tail feathers are large/broad and distinctly rounded at the ends like a hen, but the overall tail shape looks a bit more rooster-like to me. The hackle feathers are odd... (I'm new to this breed). They are rather broad and not thin like a rooster's, but they're distinctly different than the other feathers, almost spider-webbing off in little bunches. On the legs, I noticed a bump that looks like it could be the beginnings of a spur, but I have a 1 year old hen that seems to have little bumps there too. Obviously, no crowing yet, and seems to make a lot of the same little hen cluck sounds just to confuse me more!
What do y'all think?
