We have 7 new chickens that are about 3 months old. We have 6 hens and a rooster. One of the hens, Esmeralda is very sluggish, and isolated from the rest of the group. She threw up this whitish slime on my brothers shoulder when he picked her up. All the other chicks/chickens seem to be fine.

Note: we have run out of grower feed, so they have been eating the layer feed that the older chickens eat. Any ideas of what it could be??? Thanks so much!!!

I don't know much, but I know you shouldn't feed layer feed to chicks because the calcium and protein levels are waaaay off from what they need.

I also wanted to bump you up the list so someone who really knows what they're talking about can help you.

Bast of luck!

check the crop for any lumps or grainy feeling..describe how the crop feels..hard like a balloon, soft and squishy..does it have an odor?

describe droppings..color and consistency..

not a good idea for non-layers to eat layer feed.
but I don't think that is this hen's problem.
do you feed them anything else?
what bedding are you using?
