Does anyone know what laws/ordinances cover chickens in Jackson NJ. I couldn't find any. Are roos allowed? Also: Do you need a code permit to build a run or coop? Thanks
Your best bet is to visit the Town or City clerk. They will have the information there regarding chicken keeping. Sometimes there is a limit on the numbers of chickens, how far from neighbors the coop/run are located and certainly on the whether roosters are allowed. The clerk will then point you to the Building and Code Enforcement department (usually in the same building) where you can get answers to your permit requirements when building a coop. Here in my Town, we are only required to get a permit if the structure we are building or having put in (ie. a pre-built shed being delivered and set up) is 100 sq ft or larger. ETA: Here is a link to the Town of Jackson code, Chapter 98 Animals: https://www.ecode360.com/15726069 I glean from this that you need to know what zone of the Town you are located in to know if you can keep chickens or not. Again, I'd pay them a visit: Code Enforcement 65 Don Connor Blvd Jackson, NJ 08527
Thank you. I will check with them. From what I was reading, Jackson seems to be extremely farm friendly. It mentions that real estate developers must inform buyers in a development that they are next to a farm and have to deal with whatever noise etc.
