Just broke up a dog fight. Neighborly help needed :)

He NEVER said that he wasnt partly responsible..
If you actually read what he wrote..he said that he felt bad and EVEN wanted to PAY any of their vet bills...
Did you miss that or are you just reading what you want?

Nope, I didn't. But apparently you missed where I said I was impressed that he was taking responsibility. I was mostly addressing everyone else saying he wasn't at fault in anyway. Relax there, killer.

Red's my buddy, so she's gonna be a lil defensive

So to sum it up my real question is........

Have I let their dogs run amok too long to nicely ask them to chain and contain them within their own property?
Should I offer vet services? I already offered to look in on their dogs if the wanted.
Any way to apologize for the situation even though I feel part of the blame falls on their loose dogs in general? Techniqually the dogfight started right on the property line (we all think).

Boyd..i would go there and say..
"Man! That was pretty scary what happend yesterday.... we both have some big dogs that can cause some damage.... why dont we both agree to keep them on our OWN property... i dont want any of my or your kids hurt and i'm sure that you dont either... we just CANT risk that happening again..."
Something like that...? Dont offer to pay any bills....

That is probably the best thing to do--either that or fence in your place to keep them out!! A fence wont keep your wild life out--deer clear our fence all the time and hang out here because they know they are safe.

I think that you definitely should not have allowed the roaming to go on for so long but it's definitely not too late to ask them to end it! Also, maybe just go over, ask them if their dogs are injured and maybe help them clean up/stitch minor wounds, what have you. I'd be surprised if there were injuries serious enough to warrant a vet visit... Then maybe just ask them to sit down and say something like "What can we do to work together and prevent a situation like this from happening again?" Just talk it out, brainstorm together and stay on top of them, make sure they follow through. Now that there has been an incident, hopefully they'll be more receptive to being more responsible with their dogs.

I have a question!

What about the next time your daughter wants go on a walk alone?
A 9 year old girl should be able to walk the neighborhood alone.

Here is why I think you should do something:
A couple I know raised Boxers. These were very large boxers. One of them had had a litter about 2 months prior to this incident. At this time they had about 5 dogs, 4 adults and 1 puppy.
One day someone left the back gate open. A jogger went by and all 5 dogs got out and took him down. They would not stop attacking this man and sent him to the hospital.
All 5 dogs were taken by animal control and 4 of them were put down (they adopted the puppy out after temperment tests). These people are now not allowed to own dogs for X amount of time.

Trust me, there will be better blood if you suggest putting up a run than if they have to put their dogs down due to an attack.

I agree with Redhen. So sorry this happened to you, Boyd.

That, and a large, safe fence.

My thought is that if their beasts had been leashed then the damage would have been much less. So if there are vet bills incurred, it seems more their fault than yours.

I think the apology is good enough and if this doesnt encourage them to spend some money on leashes then they need a
