Just curious: is my Mallard drake developing a "winter coloration"?

It may sound like a foolish question, but I have been intrigued by Marshall's unexpected brown head feathers for a couple days now. Is it customary for Mallards, as a wild duck breed, to go through a winter phase?

Yes, male mallards will go out of breeding plumage around this time every year. They will look more like the females for awhile, then get back their full breeding plumage again during the winter to find their mates for the spring.

Oh, dear, I'm SO incredibly sorry for not getting back with you sooner. It was never my intention to be rude. I just have so many threads to respond to these days that it tends to make things difficult at times. Anyway, thank you so much for the information! So sweet of you to respond.
