I see places where ducks, and even some chickens, appear to be out in the open, around a pond or a farm without ever running off. Is this typical, or am I missing some thing? Reason I am asking, is that my lot is about 75 yards from a big public lake. Would ducks possible split their time between the lake shore and the duck-coop if they were regularly fed near the coop? Do ducks go feral?

I think your asking if your Ducks will come back home after being at the Lake???
Probably not....
They will forage all day and possibly end up swimming a good distance from the shore you want them to come back too....my sister lived out at the lake and some people had gotten four ducklings that took off and they never caught them till the lake froze in the fall.....they were a hit all summer. Never once did they go back home....

So I think you will need to build an enclosure for them.......

Best of luck....
