    Hello everyone,

My name is Lisa and my Hubby and I are the excited new parents to 5 chicks we hatched out yesterday in our homemade styrofoam incubator.

My parents live on a farm and have a small flock of Bosvelder chickens, a very hardy local breed.

They gave us 7 eggs and on day 6 we candled to find one was not fertile and another had a bacterial infection. So we were down to 5 and all 5 hatched!

They were happily cuddled together in the brooder box when I left for work earlier this afternoon. I saw two chicks drinking water already so I think we are off to a great start.

We'll keep the babies for a couple of weeks and then swap them for a few more eggs when we next go visit the farm.

I'm looking forward to joining the community of BYC.

I have a few pics that I'll post in a bit. And welcome any advise from you all.

    Cheers.

    Hi :welcome Lisa

Glad you joined the flock and have shared your chick pictures with us they look great. Thats a great hatch you have had 5/5.

If you think they are not drinking, gently dipping their beaks into the water usually does the trick and I have found once one starts they all come for a good look to see what's going on.

Good luck with your next set of eggs and be sure to ask any questions you may have everyone here to help :frow

Once they dry dip their beaks in water and let them get accustomed to their brooder.

    Good luck!

When you give them feed tap on the dish, so they realize where food is. Congratulations on your first hatch.
