There's a good article in the Learning Center that might help you narrow down the breeds you want to consider:
    https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/...cken-guide-to-picking-backyard-chicken-breeds

No matter which breed you end up with, spend time with them and handle them gently, they'll be friendlier as they grow up rather than chickens that haven't had much contact. And an occasional treat doesn't hurt either, lol.

The Learning Center has a lot of good articles in it on all sorts of poultry topics so check it out!

[IMG] so glad you have joined us.

The bantams are so small and cute - but IMO full size breeds would be the better choice. Be sure to study on the personalities and traits and pick docile friendly breeds.
At least 3 or more - they are happier in flocks.

If you start with baby chicks - the experience is so worth it - try to get them from a source that sexes them to reduce the risk of drawing a rooster. Would not want a rooster in a small flock and especially not around a small child.

Make sure you set up your coop/run so your child cannot access the flock without supervision and emphasize hand washing very early on.

    Enjoy the planning and adventure.
