Just rescued a little wanderer! First chicken in my care ever - Curious about breed.

Poor thing was left abandoned with several others..Ive seen Marans chicks described similarly, though my experience into breeds is like, an hour of research on google so far !

There are several breeds that look similar at that age, but I'm thinking its likely a Black Australorp chick.

I wish I had a better pic, but the dark chick is a Black Copper Maran. Its beak looks a bit darker than yours, but that probably varies from chick-to-chick. From what I remember, yours does look a lot like mine did at that age.

It's hard to tell from the picture - is the breast grey or is it buff (light yellow)? I have an Australorp but I don't remember what she looked like at that age (it was 2 years and many chicks ago).

Good luck! Raising chicks from this tiny is sooo rewarding.

I wish I had a better pic, but the dark chick is a Black Copper Maran. Its beak looks a bit darker than yours, but that probably varies from chick-to-chick. From what I remember, yours does look a lot like mine did at that age.

Black Copper Marans is a possibility, but I don't see any traces of the feathering on the legs which is typical with BCMs (of course hatchery quality BCMs sometimes lack the feathered legs).
