We've been wanting chickens, but not doing much about it. Neighbors told me about two chickens in the wash (near a source of water) they'd seen on a walk. The assumption was that someone had abandoned them. I walked down, and indeed, there were two full grown chickens making the very most of the expression "free range." I came home, rustled up a cat carrier, my husband, and a fish net :) to catch some chickens. Well . . . quite a few desert bushes later and quickly giving up on the net, two hens were in the carrier and on their way to their new home. (I posted a note on a tree too because someone had been feeding them I think -- I didn't want the coyotes to get them.)
I don't know what they are . . . no eggs, seem happy and healthy (except for alot of chicken poop on and around vents -- may be getting better).
I thought I was going to lose one yesterday to a friend's chihuaha she just let loose in the yard without letting me know, but the hen's just missing some tail feathers.
So Charlotte and Emily, the Bronte sisters, are in a makeshift coop (pallets, plywood, and a roost) for the night, free ranging during the day, until my husband gets the coop and run built. AND . . . I've got the schedule for chick deliveries at our local farm store.
(Blue Diamond is a small community about 30 minutes outside of Vegas)
I'm really grateful for this site!
