HI! I recently moved from suburban Chicago to a farmhouse on the outskirts of a teeny tiny town near Western Illinois University! While living in Chicago I volunteered at a children's farm, and when they found out I was moving they gave me five chickens- two white leghorns and three mixes of who knows what. I've had them for a month now and they are almost adults. Is there anything in particular I need to know about raising chickens? I'm worried about the coming winter and how they'll do!

    Thanks a bunch!!

[IMG]. As long as they are draft free I'm sure they will be fine with winter. They are very well insulated.

Hello SmallTown Chick. Congratulations on your move. I bet that was a big change for you! Welcome to BYC from 'small town' Kentucky. Best of luck to you and your chickens. You can post the question along with images of your chickens in the https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this What Breed or Gender Is This section of BYC if you want to find out what those three mixed chickens might be.

As Kevin pointed out. Chickens already come with a well insulated coat that should do just fine this winter. They suffer much more from the heat of summer than cold weather.

    Hi and :welcome

If they're almost adults, they'll be fine through the winter. :) It's heat waves they're less suited to!

I hope you find all the info you need here, and enjoy the site. :D
