A BYC member who lives near me came out with her wonderful kids, and we did pony rides on my DH's horse Pride.
She sent me a pic of my niece on Pride.. We plunked the helmet on her just after this pic. (I know It will be ON before the pic next time).

And here is Kristip's DD, my mare Indi does this goofy smiley/lip thing when you get wormer near her OR if she makes her self nervous.. I am sort of training her
to smile on command. Morgan the little girl in the pic got her to do her goofy smile thing!!

OK, I won't give you the Helmet Lecture...this time...

Pride looks like a Good Soul to put up with kids & being a Pony Ride.
Your mare has a lovely face.

That "lip thing" is called Flehmen Response and has to do with smell - curling the lip up like that closes off the nostrils & traps the smell inside the nasal passages.
It can also indicate a low-grade pain, like a minor colic - not trying to say that it means your mare is colicy.

Thanks for the helmet thing. I just got her one at the midwest horse fair, and she has a bicycle helmet.

Indi has done the Flehmen response since she was very young. She does it when she smells wormer OR when she makes herself nervous.
She will often do it out in the pasture/paddock if she makes her self nervous, or thinks she will get into trouble..
She is a very odd horse.
