Im constantly changing water and picking out pine shavings from food bowls how do i keep there food and water pine shaving free especially on days when im out all day?

When my chicks are too small to put the dish up in a brick or something, I use a large-ish square of plywood or something to set the bowls on. It doesn't completely stop the shavings getting in, but sure slows it down.

Raise the feeder and waterers up on bricks to the height of their backs... they can reach in to eat and drink, but they wont get every piece of shaving they kick around... if they're really small, setting them on a large terra cotta tile works too...

My chicks are on straw and it's harder for them to kick around (not so my broody bantam who raised them) so there's a lot less gets into the water. I have my food and water up on blocks of wood too. The poop falls through the straw as well which is a big plus.
