keeping my chickens in the coop

    i have my chickens right now in the coop. i had them free range til i finished the coop. now i want to know how long should i keep them in the coop so i know they will come back at night or at least make sure the hens will continue to lay in the coop. thanks

    There is no hard and fast rule, but the best wisdom is to keep them cooped up for 3 or 4 days. Then, don't let them out, for the first week until 2 or 3 pm. This a) shortens the time spent outside and b) allows most of the hens to have laid inside before going out.

    After 3/4 days of being cooped up, followed by a week of being let out only in the late afternoon/evening, they'll have it down pat.

    Keep them in the coop so that they will lay their eggs in there. Make a set time to let them out and put them back in.
