Keeping my chicks cool!

Here in Central Texas, it is 103 degrees at 1:3 pm on August 21st.
I saw a note about keeping chickens hydrated in extreme heat by putting black sunflower seeds in ice water.
This is Top Knot, my Plymouth Rock, standing in the ice water and eating some seeds!
I got my baby chicks on April 10th. Marbletta, my Golden Buff, has laid her 4th brown egg at 18 1/2 weeks. The eggs are small (1.6 oz.) but great orange yolk and heavy shell.
So excited!

I live in Alabama so can understand your heat.
During the hot days i spray the dirt for them several times a day because they like to dust bath in it.
I also freeze their favorite fruits and hang for a fun cool way to stay entertained.
I freeze water in Gatorade bottles and 2 L soda bottle and will put one in their waterer as well as lay a frozen 2L of water in the coop so they can lay against it if they want to.

I think we are over most of the hot weather for the season. I was dearly tempted to stand in tub of ice water myself.

I wanted to refresh this thread and ask for additional guidance on keeping my 7 week olds cool. It’s been high 80s this week and I want to be sure I’m making them as comfortable as possible. Looks like there summer is going to be a hot one. Still working through my first season as a chick mom.

i am building a coop at a new home but we won’t be moving there for a bout90 days so we ordered one online. Looks like we may have been duped by a bogus site so we are scrambling tocreate a space for them to roam safely through the day then place them back in the garage at night to keep them safe.I have 5 girls ( or at least I’m hoping they’re all girls) and they have outgrown their brooder.
I bought some hardware cloth and planned to make an A frame pen to let them hang out in the back yard.

Electrolytes can help them through the heat. Here is a simple homemade electrolyte recipe that is easy to mix up in a pinch.

1 cup water
2 tsp. sugar
1/8 tsp sea salt
1/8 tsp. baking soda

Use full strength on severely ailing chicken's, otherwise mix into their drinking water as needed at 1 cup per gallon of water. Change this out daily.
