Hey I am getting show birds and I am wondering what is the best way for keeping them.
What breed ?
You can keep show birds with your other chickens if you want. If you are afraid of a 'pecking order', or your bird losing feathers before you show, you can separate him/her. I raised my two roosters this year and showed them at my local fair and they did great; both placed! I kept them with my other chickens and they did fine.
silver laced wyandotte bantam @sourland
ok thanks! @Pleasant_valley_farm
I would be inclined to keep them separated from large fowl either in coops or well shaded areas so that feather color and quality will not be impacted. If you are not planning on showing them, run them with your flock.
Your best source of advice with the breed will be the breeder that you obtain them from. Try to enlist them as a mentor.
ok thank you so much! @sourland
They should be seperated from your other birds. If you go to a serious show a bird that is let run around with the others won't place.
My suggestion would be to put conditioning cages in your current coop or build a new coop and keep them on the floor until a month before the show and then put them into conditioning cages. You could also build a run outside to let them out sometimes
