I am looking for any help I can get with my 11 month old rooster. He is a Cornish X rooster who I have raised as a pet since he was 3 days old and love very much. I don't want to eat him or kill him if I can help it but he needs help. I noticed a week ago he was not walking around as much and was laying on his side. When I went to check on him I saw a large red spot under his wing. I could see that he was still able to walk but seemed to be uncomfortable while walking. Today I brought him inside and examined his legs, which looked fine, but saw that the red spot under his wing which I can best describe looks like a large softball, is firm and is very red and hot to the touch. It seems to bother him when you touch this area. He has also been having chills which I atttribute to the fever from the swollen area. I also discovered that he had mites which I treated with some Permethrium dust. His comb is still a nice red color, his poop looks fine and he is eating and drinking as normal. I have him on a resticted feed diet to keep him from getting to large. About 4 hours ago I gave him half of a baby aspirin crushed up in a scrambled egg with some honey mixed in and also mixed him up a gallon of antibiotics for him to start on. The redness and heat in that swollen area seems to be a little better and he seems to feel a little better but still isn't moving too much. I have moved him to an isolated area to try and keep him warm and calm but I need some advice on what to do next and what could this swollen area be? Please help with any advice you have, I really don't want to lose my chicken...

Also I forgot to mention that I am aware of the legs problems that this breed has due to their weight, but i don't think his legs are failing because he seems to be favoring this "lump" more than the actual legs. Please help if you can and thanks!!

I won't be much help

...but sounds like some type of infection by your description - red, hot, chills, fever. Hopefully someone with alot of knowledge will jump in here.

A photo would be helpful. Hot/red/swollen - hallmarks of infection of some sort. The only other suggestion I would have is to alternate warm/cool soaks (a folded washcloth is good) to the area for 15min. 4 times a day (improves circulation a bit).

Sounds like you're doing all you can short of an exploratory lancing of the swelling.

First off let me say I'm not experienced with medical questions, so I'm just offering up what I've read here.

Seems like infections in chickens aren't full of liquid pus like in people. Usually it is rubbery and needs to be removed surgically. People have posted about cutting the infection open using tweezers to remove the pus then packing the incision with antibiotics. Sometimes requiring a stitch or two.
Also the antibiotic that is mixed with the water (terramycin) may not be strong enough. I think I've read that Tylan inject-able is the preferred antibiotic for infections.
I'll attach a link to a thread about bumblefoot infection. It has a lot of good info and I think that the treatment might be similar.
Is a vet an option?

Imp- Good luck

you could try to lance it, clean out the infection, then rinse with Saline or betadine, then sew almost closed, you want it to drain any remaining infection.

that seems like some good advice there! i wouldnt know what to tell you other than what your already doing and what the above poster said....it sounds like he is in the best care possible! its good that you have him on controled feed intake.....the only other thing i can think of is maybe put some vitamins and electrolytes in his water when the antibiotics arent in there....like switch back and forth.....maybe apple cider vinegar in there? id also give him some yogurt too since hes on antibiotics
