Large, strange eggs.

One of our older hens lays a huge egg every 3 days (no eggs on other days) but they all look like this when cracked. Why?? What are the extra bits? We have no cockerel, so can’t be an embryo. Thanks in advance.

Oh and I didnt cut it open, its now in the bin but i will cut open the next one she lays.
 
Did you cut that chunk open?
Would be good to do and take a pic of fr confirmation.
Looks like a 'lash egg', which is a piece of hardened pus from an infection.
How old is bird..and what breed?

Thank you. She is around 3 years old. An ex-battery hen, so a hybrid. Im in the UK and it is getting pretty cold at night now. (I will add my region to my profile, thanks for the tip).

Oh no was hoping it wasnt a lash egg and something to do with her age.
