last rooster was very aggressive

I have a young rooster that I really do not want to have to carry a stick to keep him from attacking me. He is 4 months old; was hatched from one of my hens. I am new to raising chickens. I have heard that you should pick him up and carry him around for a bit every day and he will be more pleasant to be around. I understand he is here to protect the hens; but he really needs to know that I am not a threat.
I am so completely enjoying my hens. I never knew chickens could be so great.

I'm open to any suggestions.
